At the time when I took charge of this School, the total number of scholars on roll was below 100 and no fee was collected; but since then the number has greatly increased and a large amount of revenue collected yearly in fees, the number and amount whereof for 1906 were 216 and $3,072 respectively.
These figures have been still further augmented during the present year as stated in paragraph 5. This fact alone speaks for itself as to the efficiency of the School which has been brought about since I had the management thereof.
6. Along with the Headmasters of the other two Schools I competed in the South Kensington and the Royal Sanitary Institute's Hygiene Examinations last year, and I obtained first class certificates in both instances.
7. The salary of the English Assistant Masters in the District Schools is fixed at £270 rising to £360 per annum. Such Assistant Masters being responsible only for one or two classes and unmarried are actually better remunerated than I am who have the responsibility of a large school and a wife and three children to maintain.
8. My wife being an English lady and myself having been brought up on Western habits, the cost of our living must necessarily be equal to that of any European family in the Colony. I have, like other Europeans, also to make provision for taking my wife and family to visit their relatives at home when my holiday falls due. Under such circumstances my present salary, being only £240 per annum, is totally inadequate to meet the requirements.
For the reasons stated above, I beg to apply that my salary be increased on the 1st January, 1908, to £360 per annum rising to £450 by triennial increments of £30. Trusting that you will take this application into your favourable consideration, and recommend His Excellency the Governor to grant me the increase applied for.
